GREEN LIVING ~ Deltec Unveils Net-Zero Energy Home

By:  Leigha Dickens

What Are Net-Zero Homes?

We hear a lot these days about trying to reduce our environmental impact:  picking the less-toxic cleaning solution, choosing an energy efficient product designed to use less energy.  Yet a growing trend in green building is to take this idea of "less bad" and run with it, toward the idea of environmentally neutral and perhaps even beyond, to something that gives back and improves upon.

Enter the idea of a "Net-Zero" home:  a home designed to produce as much energy as it consumes, achieving a net energy bill of zero dollars.  A net-zero home achieves this goal through intelligent building design for maximum energy efficiency and through on-site renewable energy.

Deltec has many years of experience in creating building shells that are inherently energy efficient.  We are proud to now unveil our own Net-Zero design, called the Zero Energy Home.

The energy efficiency features of Deltec's Zero Energy Home, including 10" thick walls that allow for R40 wall insulation; a modified truss for R60 roof insulation; passive solar design with an insulated slab floor; and ultra high efficiency heating, cooling and appliances allow it to use 2/3s less energy than a similar new home.

The remaining 1/3 can be powered by an on-site solar array that fits on the home's long south-facing wing.  Although our first prototype is designed for a mid-Atlantic climate, the Deltec Green Department can work with interested customers to design a Zero Energy Home for many climates across the country.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, happens every four years, showcasing net-zero designs conceived and built by students from around the world.

As a sponsor, Deltec Homes hosted a team of students in our manufacturing facility, donating materials, equipment and experienced personnel to help the students build the wall panels that form the shell of the structure.

Their project combines the flexibility of the traditional homestead with cutting edge technology.  It showcases an ultra high-performance building envelope built in Deltec's facility, along with plenty of solar energy and excellent outdoor living spaces.

The 20 team showcase happened on the National Mall West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2011.   Appalachian State University WON the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 People's Choice Award for its Solar Homestead . This award gives the public the opportunity to vote for its favorite house. This year, 92,538 votes were cast.

Featured Homeowner- Philip Arnold, Montreat, NC

Philip Arnold, a retired C.P.A. from Atlanta, was thinking about building a timber frame house on his newly purchased property in Montreat. A couple he met while donating blood one day changed his mind. They invited him to their custom-built, Deltec round home in Black Mountain and he was hooked.

Arnold wanted to build a fun, whimsical house that was homey, yet high-tech and as comfortable as it was cost-efficient. A home that felt like a tree house high in the mountains with a dance floor so that he and his "sweetheart," Avis Fox, could ballroom dance to their hearts' content. A Deltec home, allowing plenty of room for creativity - and Fox's colorful paintings and sculptures - fit the bill.

A One-of-a-Kind Home

Deltec was able to give Arnold exactly the kind of home he envisioned. The 3,200-square-foot house, designed to accommodate visiting friends and family, includes a 1,000-square-foot guest suite connected to the main house by an enclosed walkway. The main living area features a dance floor, partitioned "conversation areas" and breathtaking panoramic views.

Though the living space is all on one-level, the house and wrap around deck is built on pilings looking two stories down onto the trees and rain gardens below, says Arnold.

Trusted Quality, an Easy Process

For more than 40 years, Deltec has been designing unique, eco-friendly circular homes combining functionality, beauty, comfort and value.  The experience of building a custom-made home was a new one for Arnold, who says it "turned out to be a fun, happy experience."

From start to finish, it was a no-hassle process, Arnold adds. "Deltec worked with me until the basic design was just right," he says, then assisted with every step of the project until the home was complete. "The whole team worked together beautifully," he adds.

Cost-Effective & Green by Design

Arnold, committed to live in a green home, worked with Deltec's green building department staff to build Montreat's first certified Healthy Built Home. "At no extra cost to me, this was a tremendous service" he says.

It's a well-insulated, solidly built home, Arnold adds, and blending in with its natural surroundings, "it just feels right." Congratulations, Philip, on your new Deltec Home.
